  • A couple who bought a new house in Utah discovered a secret room in the property
  • People initially believed the room was a sex dungeon or torture room
  • The room was later revealed to be a panic room built approximately eight years ago

A secret room many initially believed to be a sex or torture dungeon was discovered by a family in their new Cache County, Utah home.

The room was found after one of the new homeowners tried to move a bookcase in the lounge because its wall "looked off," The New York Post reported.

The family realized the wooden furniture was secured on the wall and concealed a hidden door leading to a secret room.

The room, which allegedly had a 3-foot-thick concrete roof and what appeared to be walls made of the same material, contained a lone chair in the middle and several shelves at the back, photos presumably captured using a night vision camera showed.

One of the homeowners shared the discovery on the online discussion site Reddit and claimed the room "hadn't been included on the listing" of the home built back in 1978.

"Well, how would you list that room? 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage, sex dungeon with extra soundproofing, sitting room, spacious kitchen and living room. Also, small pool, garden shed. (Home owner's association) approved!" one Reddit commenter wrote in response.

Other users believed the room looked more like a torture dungeon and advised the homeowners to douse the area with luminol — a chemical compound used by forensic scientists in crime scenes to detect invisible bloodstains.

Another Reddit commenter later clarified that the room was a panic room built in the last decade.

"I know that house. That is my wife's grandparents’ house. It's just south of Logan, UT. That panic room was actually constructed really recently, like around 8 years ago. It was more of a pet project of her grandpa than a panic room," the user said.

The homeowner said the explanation "makes more sense" due to "how updated the electric in the room is."

"Tell whoever thank you for an awesome house and let them know you guys are welcome to stop by and check it out as we update it!” the mother of two added.

The room will reportedly be converted into a gym to take advantage of its low temperatures.
