Syfy series “Van Helsing” is currently shooting Season 2. It has added a major player to its post-apocalyptic show.

“Rookie Blue” star Missy Peregrym has joined the cast of the TV show in an important role. According to Deadline, the Canadian actress will play Scarlett Harker, a woman with a mysterious past who might be able to turn the tide against vampires. Peregrym is best known for playing Officer Andy McNally in ABC series “Rookie Blue.”

The showrunner and writer of “Van Helsing,” Neil LaBute, said in a statement, “We are so lucky and happy to have Missy join the ‘Van Helsing’ team this season. The series thrives on female energy and power and we’re getting two barrels full with Missy’s talents. I can’t wait to see her jump into battle alongside Kelly Overton and the rest of the cast with all we have planned for them in Season Two.”

Season 1’s 13 hour-long episodes told the tale of Vanessa Van Helsing (Overton) – a woman who is a descendant of a long line of vampire killers who led humanity in a battle against the blood-sucking creatures. Vanessa doesn’t have any idea about her lineage but she finds out soon enough.

A volcanic eruption in Yellowstone National Park and other environmental factors contributed to significant amounts of ash and pollution being released into the atmosphere. As a result of these phenomena, the sky darkens, sunlight gets blocked and vampires emerge from the shadows. Soon, they take over the world.

Vanessa gets attacked by a vampire and goes lapses into a coma. She wakes up years later to find her daughter, Dylan, missing. She also has newfound powers.

Season 1 ended with Vanessa finding Dylan but she has become a vampire. Vanessa’s greatest ally, Axel (Jonathan Scarfe), also becomes a vampire.

“Van Helsing” Season 2 airs this fall. It airs on Syfy in the U.S., SuperEcran in Canada and on Netflix in other countries.
