KEY POINTS

  • The quarantine in parts of the U.S. has left many without jobs and salaries to pay for their expenses
  • A jobless waitress managed to get out of that hole, thanks to a kind-hearted stranger
  • There are still millions of others who are unsure as to where they will get the payment for their rent

A waitress in Los Angeles was in trouble after the lockdown left her without money to pay her rent. She will be able to escape that debt now, thanks to a kind-hearted but total stranger.

According to CNN, waitress Shujana Anthony loved her job, but the restaurant she was working in had to shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is part of major lockdowns mandated by government law leaving Anthony, and a vast number of others, no choice but to cope with living without a paycheck.

Anthony shared in her CNN interview that she had no idea where to get the payment for her $1,100 rent on her apartment. She was scared beyond belief, but thanks to viewer Tami Vaughn, she will be able to pay it. Vaughn contacted CNN and offered to pay for Anthony’s rent. This action left Anthony beyond grateful, yet pleasantly shocked at the same time.

When reached out to be asked about why she opted to help, Vaughn told the news network that it was simply because she was moved by Anthony’s plight. She also realized that there are a lot of people who are unfortunately experiencing the same fears, and she was glad to have helped even just one of them.

While Anthony may have been fortunate to get help, there are a lot of tenants and landlords that will be in trouble this April. In a report, CBS NY noted that estimates placed the number of landlords and tenants in trouble in New York at 40%, and that’s just for the month of April alone.

Queens Senator Michael Gianaris has a bill pending, which aims to waive three months rent for tenants and three months worth of mortgage payments for landlords. Others have a simpler solution: let renters have the power to use their security deposits. The desperate have called for a rent strike, but it’s clear that a solution needs to be formulated well.

Anthony and Vaughn are starting that now. Anthony, for her part, said that she would be willing to do for others what Vaughn had done for her if given the chance.
