  • “The Walking Dead” big boss teases the return of villain Governor
  • The final episodes of the series will premiere on March 1
  • “The Walking Dead Holiday Special” is now streaming on AMC+

One of the most iconic villains of “The Walking Dead” is finally returning, the big boss of the series Scott Gimple confirmed.

Speaking with Comicbook, Gimple teased a project that will feature one of the greatest villains to have appeared on AMC’s fan-favorite post-apocalyptic series.

"We're working on something with one of the great Walking Dead villains of all time, and it's coming together," Gimple said during The Walking Dead Holiday Special, the outlet quoted.

Fans would remember Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan, Samantha Morton’s Alpha, Ryan Hurst’s Beta, and David Morrissey’s Governor as the most memorable villains of the series. However, as noted by the publication, the series has already finished production for "Here's Negan,” one of the six new extended Season 10 episodes. It is scheduled to be released in 2021.

As for Hurst’s Beta, the supervillain in Season 9 and 10, he will be returning on “Tales of the Walking Dead.” It is a forthcoming episodic anthology created by Gimple following new and old individual characters and their origin story. Therefore, Comicbook speculates that Gimple might be referring to the “return of the Governor.” Fans would recall that the Governor was the primary antagonist for the whole of Season 3 and the first half of Season 4.

Highly delusional, the big bad thought of himself as a messiah and a leader for the survivors. He was killed by Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Lily (Audrey Marie Anderson) after being beaten badly by Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) during Season 4’s midseason finale.

Morrissey’s return to the franchise will not be a surprise to fans. The actor has expressed his interest in reprising his role previously.

"Obviously, The Walking Dead comes from a graphic novel series by Robert Kirkman. There are three novels within that: The Rise of the Governor, The Road to Woodbury, and The Fall of the Governor,” he told Digital Spy.

“The Walking Dead Holiday Special,” an hour-long program featuring a reunion of cast and producers of the series is now streaming on AMC+. As for the main series, “The Walking Dead” will return with its final six episodes of series on March 1 on AMC.
