The Weeknd’s 14-minute performance during the Super Bowl halftime show Sunday night became a trending topic on Twitter thanks to his hit songs and choreography that has since been turned into hilarious memes and gifs.

However, it doesn’t mean the folks on Twitter have been sharing positive comments about the star. Online spectators took the opportunity to compare The Weeknd to past performers like Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, who co-headlined the 2020 halftime show.

While there were die-hard fans of the Canadian singer who praised his vocals, others were not impressed with his performance.

Many people felt The Weeknd’s decision to perform in what has become his signature red sequined jacket and black pants were not enough to outdo past performances.

“Honestly they could’ve just replayed Jennifer and Shakira’s performance from last [year] or Prince from 2007 or any of Beyonce’s..shoot they should’ve called Janet..she deserved that spot...Honestly, I would’ve took Madonna over this,” one person tweeted.

Another person added, “The Weeknd’s performance wasn’t terrible... I mean, could do without the lip-syncing, especially since he’s not high-energy dancing, but whatever. It just wasn’t up to the caliber of Beyonce, or JLo and Shakira. It bored me ngl [not gonna lie].”

Meanwhile, one person admitted they didn’t understand why The Weeknd was being applauded for the halftime show.

“Explosive performance? What halftime show did you watch? This was easily the worst halftime show ever. @JLo and @shakira are spectacular performers. @theweeknd is absolutely not a performer, he has a couple good songs,” the individual wrote.

Lopez and Shakira’s 2020 performance pulled in over 103 million total viewers when it aired, Variety reported.

Although the Super Bowl halftime show typically pulls in more than 100 million viewers, the numbers for The Weeknd’s performance have yet to be reported.

The singer’s performance featured great visuals, including a maze of lights and masked dancers, but Lopez and Shakra’s halftime show had an underlying message about some of the political issues plaguing the country.

During the performance, Lopez wore a feathered cape with the Puerto Rican flag on the side and an American flag on the other. The performance also featured children dancing in cage-like structures, which appeared to be a reference to the treatment of immigrants.

Even though The Weeknd’s performance resulted in his songs, “Blinding Lights,” “Can’t Feel My Face,” and “Save Your Tears,” taking the top three spots on iTunes, music fans believe he failed to outperform Shakira and Lopez.
