For many singles, 2020 is the year that they hope to find love. For a good majority of these singles, the day that they will begin their search will start on Sunday with what has been dubbed Dating Sunday.

Sunday is reportedly the busiest day of the year for singles looking for love online according to a number of dating apps and websites.

Dating app Match expects to see an increase of 80% of singles using the app this Sunday based on the past two years, where it has seen its users double that day. Coffee Meets Bagel, another dating site, said it has seen similar trends in early January.

According to Coffee Meets Bagel, over 1 million messages were sent in 2019 on Dating Sunday – a record for the company in its seven-year history. The dating site also said that January is the best month for online dating with more signups and activity during this time of the year.

Even Bumble have said that the first Sunday in January is a day earmarked for singles looking for love. Bumble said that during the time between Thanksgiving and Dating Sunday, it expects to add 3 million new users and have over 20 million messages sent, the New York Post reported.

But why is the day so popular with singles? For many, it marks a following of resolutions, the start of a new year, and the hopes of finding love before Valentine’s Day. Sunday also falls on a day when singles are winding down from a busy week.

“You have people recovering from a breakup or who were down during the holidays, you have all those New Year's resolutions, and you have the clock ticking down to Valentine's Day.” Julie Spira, a cyber-dating expert told USA Today. “It's the first lonely holiday after the New Year.”

Dating Sunday also falls within “cuffing season,” when singles look for that love interest to snuggle with during the cold winter months, the New York Post reported. It also aligns with the biggest month of the year for divorces with filings increasing by as much as 30% in January, the news outlet said.
