KEY POINTS

  • Demisexuality is the sexual orientation of people who are only able to feel sexual attraction to those close to them
  • Demisexuality should not be confused with having a low sex drive because there are demisexuals who have sex often
  • New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's daughter recently came out as demisexual via social media

Demisexuality is a term many people are not familiar with yet. As society progresses and develops better ways of understanding people's sexual or gender orientation, it's important to embrace all the things that come with this positive change.

One such example is demisexuality, or the ability to feel sexual attraction only to people with whom one has developed an emotional bond. Demisexuals will only feel sexual attraction once they have already made an emotional connection with someone, which means, most of the time, they are only attracted to people who are close to them, according to Healthline.

To put it more simply, demisexuals may fit in the phrase, "connection before attraction." This does not mean that demisexuals are prudish or are afraid of sex, however. It is just that they are unable to feel romantic attraction toward people they just met, as per WebMD.

One misconception about demisexuality is that it is said to be a sign of low sex drive. This is not necessarily true, as demisexuality only refers to the type of attraction one feels and does not say anything about the frequency of sex. Some demisexuals may have sex often, while others not so much.

Another myth about demisexuality is that demisexuals need to be in love with someone before they can have sex with them. This may apply to many, but to some, they only require a connection in order to feel romantically attracted to someone. This connection does not necessarily have to be love.

As the world continues to recognize other forms of sexual orientation, several people have already started to come out and let people know about their gender and sexual orientation. Andrew Cuomo's daughter, Michaela, is one of them. The 23-year-old recently revealed via social media that she identifies as demisexual, People reported.

"When I was in elementary school, I feared that I was lesbian. When I was in middle school, I came out to my family and close friends as bisexual. When I was in high school, I discovered pansexuality and thought, 'That's the flag for me,'" Michaela stated.

"I've recently learned more about demisexuality and have believed that that identity resonates with me most," she added.
