KEY POINTS

  • Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer does not see a bright future for them
  • The Cardinals just recently lost star quarterback Kyler Murray to an ACL tear
  • Palmer does not expect the Cardinals to fire head coach Kliff Kingsbury

The NFL season has not been kind to the Arizona Cardinals, and it is expected to continue in the final three weeks as they will be without the services of star quarterback Kyler Murray after suffering an ACL tear.

In the eyes of former Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer, the franchise is stuck between a rock and a hard place with not much room to navigate.

Speaking with The 33rd Team, Palmer explained the Cardinals' current predicament.

"It's tough to watch. The future is bleak right now. When you really look at it and the timeline of things – Kyler (Murray) blows his knee out beginning of December. You've got to throw in nine months, maybe 12 depending on the process, and any hiccups in the process. He's on a short timetable," Palmer stated.

"They've been banged up everywhere. They've lost guys in the front and on the back end of the defense, so it's just been one of those years."

The Cardinals entered the 2022 season with hope in their eyes after going 11-6 in 2021 off the back of stellar MVP-esque numbers from Murray of 3,787 yards and 24 touchdowns while having the benefit of signing running back James Conner, defensive end J.J. Watt and center Rodney Hudson.

Though they eventually lost to eventual Super Bowl champions Los Angeles Rams, the Cardinals fanbase had hoped that it was a turning point in their fates.

It would not come to pass as they had a record of 4-8 entering their Week 13 bye – practically ending their chances of making the postseason.

Prior to the start of the 2022 season, the Arizona faithful had their Cardinals winning eight or nine games. They currently stand at 4-10.

Fans have been searching for an answer as best they can and many came to the conclusion that it was time for head coach Kliff Kingsbury to go and Palmer is not entirely sure if that is the answer to their woes.

"They just re-signed [general manager] Steve [Keim] and coach Kingsbury. I know every job in the NFL is attractive, but that's not that attractive of a job right now. If you fire Kliff after one year, and they've been recycling coaches every couple years, I'd be shocked if they cleaned house. But, it's obviously not looking great with Kyler's situation," he concluded.

The Cardinals need some sense of direction to close out the season, though that may be a tough ask as they have the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers coming up next.
