She was nominated in an Emmy in 1989 for her portrayal of Elmira Boot Johnson on the TV mini-series “Lonesome Dove.” She was nominated again the 1996 Showtime film adaptation of “Bastard Out of Carolina.”

She had breakout roles in the ‘80s, as TMZ noted, staring in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and co-starring with Richard Dreyfuss in “Mr. Holland's Opus.” For her most recent role, she played the wife of Bill Paxton in “The Circle.”

According to her page on the Internet Movie Database, those were two of the films she was best known for.

Her family was the most important thing to her, her profile on IMDB reads. “For the past fourteen years, she has said that family has been the most important thing to her and she has set most of her time aside to be a ‘present’ mother to her son,” the bio says.

Headly took roles when it worked out for her schedule as a mother. “Movies, plays and television are chosen, for the most part, when they occur in town or on a school break. She has taken the current year to homeschool her son for his seventh grade,” the bio continues.

The mother always dreamed of being an actress. “She was raised in New York City and wanted to be an actress from the time she was a child, graduating with acting honors from the High School of Performing Arts,” her profile reads.

Even though she was raised in New York, Chicago is where her acting career took off, becoming “a part of its budding theater community.” Headly was asked to join Steppenwolf Theatre Company. That’s where she learned “what it really was to be an actress on her feet.” She performed comedy and drama.

The Emmy-nominated actress is survived by her husband, Byron McCulloch, and son, Stirling.
