Meghan Markle may or may not have a new royal title when Prince Charles takes over the throne.

One netizen asked on Quora what Markle’s title will be when Prince Charles becomes the king, or if she will remain Duchess of Sussex. The netizens believe that there will only be a slight change for Markle when Prince Charles becomes the new king.

According to Chris Spencer, a former Campaigns Officer, there is a long-standing tradition of making the monarch’s second son the Duke of York. When Prince Charles takes over the throne and when Prince Andrew dies, the title will be conferred to Prince Harry. It’s also possible that they will just keep the title free for Prince Louis.

Sallie Smythe, a royalist and monarchist, agreed with Spencer. According to her, Prince Andrew’s daughter would not inherit his title and he has no sons, so the Duke of York will return to the crown. As long as Prince Andrew is alive, he will be the Duke of York, so Prince Harry might just retain his current title – the Duke of Sussex.

Markle has no royal title of her own right. She only became the Duchess of Sussex because she is married to Prince Harry. The former “Suits” star only reflects her husband’s title. So whatever Prince Harry’s title will be, its female counterpart will be given to Markle.

Prince Harry’s title will have a slight change when Prince Charles becomes the new monarch, for there will be an addition of the definite article “The.” From being HRH The Duke of Sussex Prince Henry (Harry), it will be HRH The Duke of Sussex The Prince Henry.

Although there would be no significant difference to Prince Harry and Markle’s titles when Prince Charles becomes the new monarch, it will make a huge difference to their children. At present, Markle and Prince Harry’s son Archie is one of Her Majesty’s great-grandchildren, so he couldn’t be styled prince.

However, when Prince Charles becomes king, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children will be elevated from being great-grandchildren to being grandchildren of the monarch and they will be entitled to the status of HRH and Prince/Princess just like Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice
