HBO Max’s “Love Life” follows a millennial played by Anna Kendrick, but the narrator sounds much more polished and all-knowing. So who is the voice behind the scenes? It’s a British actress who audiences have likely seen before.

Lesley Manville is credited as the “Love Life” narrator. American audiences may remember her role as Cyril in “Phantom Thread,” which earned her both BAFTA and Oscar nominations for best supporting actress. Others likely recognize Manville as brothel madame Lydia Quigley, a part she has played for three seasons Hulu’s “Harlots.” The Olivier winner, who has been acting for over 40 years, also was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2015, a high honor for her work in the arts.

“Love Life” follows Anna Kendrick’s Darby as she searches for love throughout her 20s. Manville’s narrator not only knows all of Darby’s life, but she also offers some scientific data at the beginning of each episode.

“By the time the average person ends up with the love of their life, they will have been in seven relationships,” Manville’s voiceover in the first episode claims. “Of those, two are often long-term relationships while the rest are a mix of short-term flings, casual dating and one night stands. The average person will also fall in love two of those times, and have their heart broken twice as well.”

Are those numbers real? The writers can’t recall where the data came from, and they emphasized that they’re included for dramatic effect more than anything else.

“I don’t think we want people to think that we’re building our story on this foundation of the exact science of a relationship or anything like that,” co-showrunner Bridget Bedard told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s supposed to feel lighter than that, a more poetic way of saying, ‘Everybody goes through a lot of [relationships] before they figure out who they are and who they should be with.’”

“Love Life” episodes 1-3 are available now. New episodes will release on HBO Max weekly.
