  • Justin Bieber thinks his album "Changes" was included in the wrong category at the 2021 Grammy Awards
  • The singer says he found it "weird" that his album was nominated in the pop category instead of R&B
  • Bieber insists "Changes" has the chords, melodies and vocal style of an R&B album and not pop

While Justin Bieber appreciates being recognized, he is not happy about one nomination he received for the 2021 Grammy Awards.

Bieber scored four nods when the complete list of nominees for the 63rd annual Grammy Awards was announced Tuesday. He was nominated for best pop solo performance for "Yummy," best pop duo/group performance for "Intentions" and best country duo/group performance for his collab with Dan+Shay, "10,000 Hours."

But the singer had an issue with one Grammy nomination: best pop vocal album for "Changes." Bieber took to Instagram to complain about his fifth studio album being included in the pop category instead of R&B.

"To The Grammy I am flattered to be acknowledged and appreciated for my artistry," Bieber said in a statement.

"I am very meticulous and intentional about my music. With that being said I set out to make an R&B album. Changes was and is an R&B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album which is very strange to me. I grew up admiring R&B music and wished to make a project that would embody that sound," he continued.

Bieber went on to say that he found it strange that his album was nominated in the pop category considering its elements. Nevertheless, he made it clear that he loves pop music and is grateful for the nomination.

"For this not to be put into that category feels weird considering from the chords to the melodies to the vocal style all the way down to the hip hop drums that were chosen it is undeniably, unmistakably an R&B album!" he wrote.

"To be clear I absolutely love Pop music it just wasn't what I set out to make this time around," he continued. "My gratitude for feeling respected for my work remains and I am honored to be nominated either way."

To emphasize his gratitude for the recognition, Bieber wrote in the caption, "Please don't mistake this as me being ungrateful, these are just my thoughts take em or leave em. Thank you to the people who fought for me to even have any noms."

The "Yummy" singer's fans flooded his post with congratulatory messages. They also backed Bieber and said that they were very proud of him.

His statement comes amid major R&B artists such as The Weeknd, Alicia Keys, Summer Walker and Kehlani getting shut out of the Grammy nominations completely, Variety noted.

Hours after the release of the list, The Weeknd took to Twitter to slam the Recording Academy after his hit album "After Hours" and singles "Blinding Lights" and "Heartless" failed to receive any nods at the Grammys despite being critical and commercial successes.

"The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency..." he tweeted.

The 2021 Grammy Awards is set to be hosted by Trevor Noah and will be broadcast on the CBS Television Network on Jan. 31, 2021, at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PT.
