Although Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s pregnancy announcement may have shocked the world, friends of the former “Suits” star were surprised to learn the couple was expecting their first baby shortly after the actress revealed she was trying to get pregnant.

Following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal wedding in May, there were numerous rumors suggesting the couple would be expanding their family. However, those closest to Markle assumed it would take some time before she became pregnant.

“Her friends knew she was trying and that she wasn’t going to wait long because she’s older,” a source told People following the pregnancy announcement.

“But everyone was so surprised it happened so quickly,” the insider added.

Although some of Markle’s friends suspected she was pregnant when she attended Princess Eugenie’s royal wedding on Friday, “they kept it very close to the chest” and didn’t address their suspicions.

Markle’s growing baby bump will be on full display for the next two weeks. Prince Harry and his wife are expected to complete a 16-day tour visiting several cities and making 75 appearances. “I think it is very brave [to have announced the pregnancy] ahead of one of the most grueling trips they will have to make,” a confidante told People.

“The great thing is that [Meghan] is in the best possible hands,” the source added.

Kensington Palace announced the couple was expecting their first child on Monday with the following statement: “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.”

News of Markle’s pregnancy comes amid the ongoing drama with her estranged family. A source told Us Weekly the former actress didn’t personally share her baby news with her father, and instead, “he found out the same time as the rest of the world.”

Although Markle’s half-sister, Samantha, has made several negative comments about her sibling in the past, she recently told The Sun the 37-year-old’s pregnancy “changes everything.”

“It just makes everything that happened over the last year disappear. I want Meghan to be happy and calm and have peace. Everybody needs to be positive.”
