Prince Charles knew he was destined to take the throne, but once his marriage with Princess Diana started to fall apart, he began to fear his wife and siblings were planning to destroy any chance he had of ascending the throne after Queen Elizabeth.

Following Charles’ separation from Diana, the Prince of Wales became less popular in the press and according to “Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles” by Tom Bower, he also lost favor with members of the royal family.

Bower revealed Prince Charles became suspicious his brothers Prince Edward and Prince Andrew were “plotting his downfall” in 1996.

The biographer noted the Prince of Wales was especially wary of Andrew, who he believed was jealous about not being the first in line to reign.

After Princess Diana’s Panorama interview in 1995, where she detailed Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, the future King suspected Andrew was “spreading poison” about his extramarital affair to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

“After the broadcast, the Queen and Prince Philip - neither of whom Charles viewed as well-meaning advisers - told him that he could not rebuild his image nor dampen the controversy about the succession until he broke with Camilla,” Bower stated.

Charles’ paranoia also extended to Diana, who he believed was working with Sarah Ferguson to ruin his claim to the throne by replacing him with Prince William.

The nervous Prince feared if Queen Elizabeth were to abdicate or die, Prince Andrew would be announced as Regent until Prince William was old enough to rule.

The Palace has not commented on allegations about Prince Charles’ Paranoia.
