Netflix's "Squid Game" is a huge success and with its cliffhanger ending, many are looking forward to a second season. But is a sequel in the works?

The streaming service has not officially renewed the hit Korean survival drama TV series yet. But many are hoping that it will have another installment, especially because there are still too many things on the show that need to be addressed, including Seong Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) decision to stay in Korea instead of pursuing his flight to the United States to visit his daughter. Unfortunately, director Hwang Dong-hyuk said that a sequel is not in the works as of late.

"I don’t have well-developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It is quite tiring just thinking about it," he told Variety. "But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors."

Since making "Squid Game" was a stressful process, Hwang has no plans to repeat it. He did mention that he wants a team of writers for the sequel that may or may not happen. However, Hwang is famous for his solitary methods and he admitted that "I'm not great at teamwork."

According to Hwang, when he was younger, he would just drink half a bottle of soju to get his creative juices flowing. However, when he worked on "Squid Game," it took him six months to rewrite the first two episodes. He also consulted with his friends for improvements.

When asked about the factors that made "Squid Game" a success, Hwang pointed out its simplicity and the very relatable characters.

"I wanted to write a story that was an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society, something that depicts an extreme competition, somewhat like the extreme competition of life. But I wanted it to use the kind of characters we’ve all met in real life," he explained. "As a survival game it is entertainment and human drama. The games portrayed are extremely simple and easy to understand. That allows viewers to focus on the characters, rather than being distracted by trying to interpret the rules."

If "Squid Game" Season 2 will receive a green light and Hwang agrees to do it, it might have an entirely new cast. However, Gi-hun (Lee) is expected to return. Police detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) may also return because although he was left for dead after his brother (Lee Byung-hun), the Front Man, shot him, nobody actually saw his dead body, Harper's Bazaar reported.
