  • A woman was seen on video being restrained to her airplane seat with duct tape
  • She attacked American Airlines' flight attendants and attempted to open the aircraft's forward boarding door
  • The woman was taken to a local hospital and placed on the airline's internal no-fly list pending an investigation

An airplane passenger was restrained to her seat with duct tape for attacking flight attendants and attempting to open the aircraft's door in midflight, the airline confirmed.

The unidentified woman was restrained "for the safety and security of other customers and [the] crew," American Airlines told the New York Post.

She had "attempted to open the forward boarding door and physically assaulted, bit and caused injury to a flight attendant," Insider reported, citing a statement from a spokesperson for the airline.

The incident occurred Tuesday on American Airlines Flight 1774, which was traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Footage of the incident uploaded to TikTok showed the woman in the first-class section of the aircraft with duct tape around her chest and mouth as she attempted to scream at passengers who were departing the plane after it landed. The video has since been taken down from the account that uploaded it but has spread to other platforms.

The incident allegedly started halfway into the two-hour Texas to North Carolina flight when "all flight attendants were running up and down the aisles, frantically kind of like whispering to each other," uploader @lol.ariee reportedly said in a follow-up video, as per Insider.

The crew began locking bathrooms, grabbing bags from overhead bins and wouldn’t say what was happening, the TikTok user said.

"It was just kind of like chaos and no one know what's going on," continued @lol.ariee, whose account has also since been taken down.

According to the TikTok user, the pilot then spoke over the intercom and asked passengers to stay in their seats because of a "bad situation in the plane," which he did not further elaborate on, Insider reported.

A flight attendant who sat near passengers explained that a woman who was experiencing an apparent mental breakdown "had an outburst," the passenger said.

"I guess it took all five flight attendants to subdue her and like literally take her down," the TikTok user was quoted as saying by the New York Post. "They pretty much took her down, put her in the seat and duct taped her."

Emergency personnel waiting on the ground in Charlotte took the woman to a local hospital, according to American Airlines. She was then placed on the airline's "internal" no-fly list pending an investigation on the incident.
