A woman filmed her suicide after being scolded for spending too much time on TikTok, a video sharing mobile application, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

The woman, identified as 24-year-old Anitha, was introduced to the application via a friend. However, when she started spending too much time on the app and began ignoring her two children, aged two and four, her family informed her husband, who lives in Singapore, about the same. When he confronted her over the phone, Anitha refused to deactivate the app. He yelled at her and told her he would destroy the phone.

Unable to take the scolding, Anitha killed herself by consuming pesticide and recorded the act on TikTok. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died without responding to the treatment. The family said they informed the husband because the couple’s daughter got hurt while playing as her mother was busing using the application.

Police said the woman left behind a note asking her husband to look after their children. Meanwhile, the suicide video has gone viral on social media.

In another incident earlier this week, a teenager died after accidentally pressing the trigger of a pistol, while making a TikTok video in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Pratik Wadekar, 17, and his relatives were in a hotel room when they decided to shoot a video by posing with the pistol. However, the trigger was accidentally pressed and the bullet hit the victim. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

TikTok, an app owned by Chinese-based Bytedance, reportedly has over 200 million users in India. The app was banned in the country for a few days in April due to inappropriate and pornographic content and was pulled down from Google Play Store and Apple's App Store.
