A woman in China was accused of animal abuse after she made her "ugly cat" undergo plastic surgery. According to the Mirror UK, the woman took her cat to have an eye operation after claiming its eyes were in "ugly" shape.

The cat reportedly underwent a double-eyelid operation, worth $1,500, to add a crease to the eyelid to create the look of a monolid. Pictures of the cat were released on local television networks showing the feline with fur shaved off its face. The cat's face was red and its eyes looked swollen.

According to Mirror, the animal hospital where the operation took place was not unfamiliar with these sorts of procedures. Some animal owners chose to get surgery for their pets to compete in shows.

Since the report aired on Chinese television, the owner faced criticism on social media.

"I would go as far to say this is animal abuse - complete disregard for the poor cat's feelings," one Weibo user said. "It doesn't even look like the same cat anymore," another added. "It doesn't even look like the same cat anymore. This is plain torture."

This is not the first time a pet owner put an animal under the knife. In 2017, a family came under fire for making their dog undergo plastic surgery to make him look more like the pooch from the Jim Carrey film, "The Mask." Marina Esmat reportedly asked vets in Russia to lower her dog's ears, which had grown straight up instead of lying flat.

"We decided to correct the ears and started looking for a surgeon," she told local media at the time. "We used glue and tape to stick the ears down at first, but nothing helped. The dog, of course, felt no discomfort."

"As a family we decided that the ears should be corrected surgically. Doctors tried to talk us out of it," Esmat said. "I would like the dog to have pups, but with the ears, we could not find a suitable mate. We also want to participate in competitions. And now everything is fine."
