A 56-year-old woman in Spain was arrested for allegedly poisoning her partner with laxative pills until he passed away. The suspect swindled more than $100,000 of the deceased man’s money before his suspicious death.

Investigators believe the woman sent her 70-year-old partner to a Valencia hospital by giving him laxative pills. The man spent about seven months in a hospital bed because doctors could not figure out what was causing his chronic diarhea, according to the Olive Press.

The elderly man was first hospitalized in September 2020 and was eventually discharged, but he wound up back in the hospital again after about four days. During the entire time he was in the hospital, the accused woman had reportedly used his credit cards to make cash withdrawals and payments.

The total amount she stole from him came up to roughly $104,000.

Investigators noted how the patient’s condition would improve while he was in the ICU, where visitors were not allowed. However, once the doctors would transfer him to the general ward, where loved ones could pay him a visit, his condition would deteriorate.

The man's girlfriend would visit him while he was in the general ward, and it is believed she may have continued lacing his meals with laxative pills during those visits, LADbible reported.

The suspect also reportedly managed to keep the man's friends and relatives away from him while he was hospitalized; she falsely claimed they were not allowed to visit him due to COVID-19 restrictions, as per Euro Weekly News.

The victim continued to suffer the effects of chronic diarrhea until he passed away in April 2021. It was only after his death that his children found one of his bank accounts had a negative balance.

Numerous receipts from pharmacies also showed that a large number of laxative pills were bought while their father was sick.

Investigations began a month after the man's death under suspicious circumstances. Cops discovered his girlfriend had used his credit cards at different ATMs and made cash withdrawals of around $70,300. They also found evidence of the woman having used the cards to buy items worth roughly $34,000.

The woman was arrested in connection with her partner’s death and is also being investigated on suspicion of misappropriation and fraud.
