A woman stole a newborn baby girl from a hospital after promising her parents that she would get them money under a government scheme. The incident took place in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal on Sunday.

According to local reports, the unidentified mother gave birth to the girl at a private hospital Friday. The mother-daughter duo was discharged Sunday. When the family was leaving the hospital after settling the bills, a woman, claiming to be a social worker, approached them. The woman told the family that the government had a scheme that provided $85 to all the newborn girl children.

After convincing them about the same, the woman took the family to a nearby government hospital. She then sent the parents of the newborn to collect something and fled the scene with the baby. The parents immediately filed a police complaint.

Police said the investigation was ongoing and they managed to identify the woman through CCTV footage. They said they were trying their level best to nab the woman and rescue the girl.
