  • "Wonder Woman 1984" director Patty Jenkins is pro theatrical release
  • But the director agreed to make the movie available on HBO Max
  • Jenkins agreed to release the film on HBO Max because there was no good option available

Director Patty Jenkins got candid about "Wonder Woman 1984" heading to HBO Max in her recent interview.

Gal Gadot's "Wonder Woman" in 2017 was a huge hit that it spawned a sequel, "Wonder Woman 1984." However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was pushed back and the people behind it eventually agreed to just release it simultaneously on the big screen and HBOX Max.

"If you had told me a year ago that we would ever go straight to streaming in any way, shape or form, I would have flipped out," Jenkins was quoted by Deadline as telling Jess Cagle on the SiriusXM Stars channel Tuesday. "Like I’m not for that plan in general, you know, I’m, I’m, I’m very pro theatrical release and I will be that again, as soon as this is over."

Jenkins wanted the superhero flick to be available in theaters only, but the pandemic brought unexpected changes that affected the industry. She agreed to release the movie on the streaming service because there was no good option available.

"However, this is such a crazy year. It’s such a crazy year. It’s like all of us are trying to figure out with our lives, how to do everything the best we can. And so I kept saying there is no good option," she continued.

"Like when we would talk about it, there was no good option. Wait until when. And then every movie in the world tries to come out at the same time. And you know, there was no good option. I literally gasped a little bit when the pitch for this idea was said, because I was like, ‘Oh, the idea of it going into people’s homes on Christmas Day.’ I just was like, you know what, that’s actually pretty incredible to get to share whether, you know, it’s Christmas for people or not the holiday season and in this moment to just try to reach people however they can see it.”

"Wonder Woman 1984" would be the first film on HBO Max available in 4K Ultra HD, HDR 10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. In this way, fans can watch the movie safely at home with the best screen and sound quality.

"Wonder Woman 1984" will be available on HBOX Max and in theaters on Dec. 25.
