A pit bull was attacked and eaten by an alligator during a walk near a retention pond in a park in Florida on Thursday.

Cynthia Robinson, the dog’s owner said she was walking her six-year-old pet dog, named Tank, near the pond around 7.am. EDT Thursday when the canine was attacked and killed by the 10-foot alligator.

"He was so fast. He took my dog, and he was gone. ... Tank didn’t even stand a chance," Robinson told Spectrum News. “I wanted to help him, but that gator was huge. I haven’t seen a big gator like that but maybe at Busch Gardens," she added.

Following a complaint, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission dispatched a team to search for the gator in the pond. The park too has since been closed.

Hoping that such attacks don’t take place again, Robinson said, “All I could do was stand there and watch my dog get eaten. And I just don’t want it to happen to no one else or a kid or anything.”

Alligator attacks have been on a rise in the state of late. In a similar incident earlier this month, a pet dog, was almost eaten alive by a massive alligator. The dog’s owner saw that the canine had fallen into the canal behind his home. By the time he reached the canal, the gator had already caught hold of the dog.

“The homeowner heard a commotion and ran out. Saw the alligator had the dog. He jumped in the canal, pried the alligator’s mouth open, and got the dog. We got a happy ending to this one. They don’t always happen that way,” Lt. Rob Gerkin of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said. The gator was captured a few hours after the attack while the dog’s owner suffered minor injuries.
