The parents of a 14-year-old boy sued Apple on Monday, alleging that his AirPods caused him to lose hearing in one of his ears after an Amber Alert went off with no instruction to control the volume of it.

The boy, identified as B.G., was 12 years old when the incident occurred. He was watching Netflix on his iPhone at a "low volume" when the extremely loud alert went off suddenly. His parents, Carlos Gordoa and Ariani Reyes, believe this caused him to lose his hearing, the lawsuit noted.

"The AirPods do not automatically reduce, control, limit, or increment notification or alert volumes to a safe level that causes them to emit," the lawsuit said.

This has led B.G.’s parents to claim that Apple knew about the problem and has been negligent about fixing it.

B.G. has to wear a hearing aid in one of his ears which will be something that will affect him for the rest of his life. The loud Amber Alert also immediately caused him to suffer from dizziness, vertigo, nausea and tinnitus, the lawsuit explained.

Other AirPods users have complained of the same issue on an Apple Discussion page and Reddit.

"Please fix this. I literally threw my AirPod across the room when I got a shrill text alert while listening to peaceful music. Not cool," one message reads.

On April 4, Apple released new instructions under its support options on how to “change the settings of your AirPods and AirPods Pro.” It explains how to activate noise cancellation, transparency mode, and off.

It is unclear if the updated instructions and the lawsuit are correlated.
