A first-year engineering student was stabbed to death by her friend after she turned down his romantic proposal. The assailant turned the knife on himself following the incident and currently remains in critical condition.

The incident took place on the premises of a private university in the Yelahanka suburb of India's IT capital of Bengaluru on Monday. The deceased, identified as 19-year-old B. Tech student Laya Smitha, was stabbed multiple times by the accused, Pavan Kalyan, 21, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) degree in a separate institute in the same city, Hindustan Times reported.

As per local media reports, the accused, hailing from the same village as Smitha, barged into her university campus and attacked her with a knife. The man then stabbed himself in the chest to end his life and sustained serious injuries in the attempt.

The college staffers were informed about the horrific assault after some students spotted the duo lying in a pool of blood, NDTV reported.

Both Kalyan and Smitha were rushed to a hospital, where the latter was declared brought dead. Kalyan, who suffered a knife injury in the chest, is currently battling for his life. The incident stirred panic among the students.

Bengaluru district superintendent of police Balakrishna Baladandi told the Times of India they were yet to ascertain the reason behind the attack. As per the outlet, the victim and the accused knew each other and studied in the same pre-university college. On several occasions, the accused was seen waiting to meet Smitha outside their college.

The principal of Nrupatunga University, where the accused studied, told TOI: "Pavan Kalyan had joined us last September and was regular to classes. We never had any issues with him," he said.
