A 20-year-old man was custody Friday after a video emerged online of an assault on a 75-year-old resident of a Michigan nursing home. Police have not released the names of either man involved.

Detroit police arrested the younger man and are holding him at the Detroit Detention Center on complaints of assault and battery. The elderly man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident occurred May 15 at the Westwood Rehabilitation Nursing Center in Detroit. The video surfaced online Thursday. The younger man, who was a temporary resident at the time, is seen smacking the older resident repeatedly before switching to punches. The younger man continues punching the resident as the latter tries to get up, and stops once the older man is in a chair. The camera then shows the older man bleeding from his ear and blood on the bed sheets from the punches.

Saif Kasmikha, an attorney representing the nursing home, said it cooperated with the police investigation.

“Westwood has been cooperating with the police and will continue to do so. The safety, health and well-being of our residents remain a top priority of Westwood. We will continue to monitor the situation,” Kasmikha said in a statement.

The facility has since been cleared of any potential culpability in the case by police.

“What our investigation has revealed so far was the nursing home was unaware of an assault until they saw the video,” Detroit police Chief James Craig said at a press conference Thursday.
