California-based LoHi Tech is recalling its SOWTECH Espresso Machines because of a possible burn hazard. There have been five reports of burn injuries caused by the product.

The company is recalling about 24,900 units of the SOWTECH Espresso Machines with glass carafes. According to the recall alert posted Thursday on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website, the glass carafes can break while being used, thereby posing a burn hazard to the user.

As of the notice, the company has received 48 reports about the glass carafe breaking, causing five burn injuries.

The affected products were sold online at lohi-direct.com and Amazon.com from March 2017 to October 2020. They are black in color and have "Model CM6811" printed at the bottom of the machine on a silver label. Photos of the recalled espresso machines are available on both the recall alert at CPSC and the company website.

Those who have the recalled espresso machines are being advised to stop using them immediately and to contact the company to get a free replacement metal carafe.

"To register online to receive a free replacement, you will be required to submit photos and order number documenting possession of the recalled espresso machines," the company said. "Please be sure you have the product on hand and be prepared to photograph your espresso machines prior to beginning the registration process."

Burn Hazards

Most people can use espresso machines without having any problems, Homey Comfort noted, but they can still pose certain dangers. For instance, the water used to make espresso typically heats up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. At that temperature, it is hot enough to cause a burn if it touches the skin.

According to the American Burn Association (ABA), most scald burns happen at home, typically when preparing hot food or drinks as well as from being exposed to hot water in bathtubs or showers.

"Since immediate removal of the hot liquid from the skin may lessen severity, splash and spill burns may not be as deep as burns suffered in a bathtub," the ABA said.

According to the organization, anyone can get scald burns, but they're more likely to happen among young children, older adults and those with disabilities.
