A 500-pound black bear living near a Tennessee college campus was captured and relocated to a remote area of the Cherokee National Forest.

The bear nicknamed “Big Bruin” was living in an area near Tusculum College in Greeneville. Due to an increase of potential negative interaction from the bear changing up its travel routine, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency decided to free-range tranquilize the bear to transport it to the forest, according to a statement on Thursday.

Over time, the bear had become habituated to human and unnatural food. Wildlife Sgt. David Carpenter said in the statement that the bear had “regular access to garbage, birdseed, and pet food had and been in the area for a few years but ramped up its activity and property damage last year.”

The Greeneville Fire Department also assisted with the transportation of the bear by utilizing some specialized equipment to handle the weight and size of the bear.

The black bear was bigger than average. Weights range between 125 to 600 pounds for adults, according to TWRA’s website.

“As bears expand into areas with suitable habitat, it is important for communities to learn how to coexist with them,” TWRA said.

Black bears had once roamed all of Tennessee.
