The “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 finale was filled with shocking moments, but none were more abrupt than the cliffhanger. In the final moments of the show, Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) talked about the possibility of going on a date. Simmons was left alone in her office by the Kree monolith, and then the stone suddenly escaped the cage and absorbed Simmons. So what exactly happened?

First things first, Simmons is not dead. Yet it still isn’t clear what the stone did. “And now that she's dead -- [laughs] no, I'm just kidding -- or lost somewhere,” executive producer Jeff Bell told IGN. “Who knows what happened to her? But it seemed like too good of an opportunity not to explore. We love Elizabeth as an actress, and we look forward to seeing what happens to her and how she deals with it.”

Bell assured fans that the team would notice her disappearance quickly and go into search mode. Actress Elizabeth Henstridge isn’t too worried about being rescued. She is signed on for "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Season 3, and she thinks that her character’s romantic connection with Fitz might help save her.

“Having had that conversation, in her mind, whatever happens to her, she’s thinking, ‘Well, I know Fitz is going to come and get me because he’s my boyfriend now,’” Henstridge told Entertainment Weekly.

In fact, Fitz and Simmons’ romantic arc might get a lot of screen time next season. “The idea of getting Fitz and Simmons — who had been one person — to become two whole people, come back together, agree to go on a date, and then have this happen, felt beautifully poetic and promises some really intriguing stories next season, which is really what it’s all about,” Bell told Variety.

We’re hoping those “intriguing stories” happen after Simmons is saved. After all, we’ve watched Fitz pine for Simmons from afar before, but Bell wasn’t letting out too many details.

Before fans can worry about their romance, Simmons has to return to the team. Bell noted that Fitz won’t be going on any rescue missions alone. Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the whole team will be focused on finding the biochemist. “I wouldn’t limit it to Fitz,” he explained to Entertainment Weekly. “Everyone will be very upset and concerned after they figure out what happened. I would suspect our team would not take this lightly and will do everything they can to figure out what happened.”

Fans won’t get to see the team start their search until “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 3 premieres next fall.
