“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is still in the middle of its longest hiatus ever, but ABC finally released the first trailer for Season 6 on Monday. It reveals Coulson’s fate.

When the Marvel drama left off, Coulson (Clark Gregg) was dying as part of his Ghost Rider deal. He went to Tahiti to live out his final days with May (Ming-Na Wen).

The “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 6 trailer announces his death. Coulson’s hologram advises Mack (Henry Simmons), and May says she was there “until the very end” and that they got “more than we thought we would.” Notice that May doesn’t say he died, which might be an important detail — especially considering how the trailer ends.

In the final shot, we see Coulson’s back. “You’re from S.H.I.E.L.D.,” someone says.

“Never heard of it,” he says.

He turns towards the camera to confirm to viewers that Clark Gregg is back. But is he Coulson? Has his memory been erased? Is it just someone who looks like him? Audiences will have to wait until summer for answers.

The Season 6 promo video also teased danger for Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) as well. She is searching for Fitz (Iain DeCaestecker). One version of him died, but there is a frozen version of him out there that was in stasis for decades to save the team when they traveled through time. Getting him back might not be easy, though.

Simmons is pictured in a stasis pod like the one Fitz was in. There’s a bloody handprint on the front and she sheds a tear.

The trailer also emphasizes that S.H.I.E.L.D. has a dangerous new enemy. It isn’t clear who the people are or what they’re trying to do. However, Mack warns that they’re “extremely powerful.”

The “Agents of SHIELD” trailer also shows plenty of action and special effects, as usual. The extended clip did not, however, reveal a premiere date. Season 6 is expected to premiere sometime this summer.
