Veteran Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan, who underwent a surgery for bilateral inguinal hernia at the Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai Saturday, will be discharged Monday.

Bachchan consulted doctors following a nagging pain in the abdomen. Upon detailed examination, doctors had advised a surgical intervention.

Inguinal hernia is the most common problem in men and its only treatment is via surgery. However, many people are misguided that medicines and yoga can cure the disease. This leads to the delay in the operation and worsens the condition, Dr Vinod Chandi Ramani, head of general surgery at PD Hinduja Hospital, was quoted as saying by the DNA.

Actor Abhishek Bachchan took to Twitter to announce his father's stable health condition and fast recovery. Thank you all for your wishes and prayers. The surgery went off well and dad is now in the room resting.

Later, Amitabh Bachchan thanked his fans for their prayers and informed them of his health condition on Twitter.

Took almost 5 hrs on the OT, but could feel the concern and wishes of the TwFmXt every minute .. .Took long because 2 surgeries had to be done on either side..yes there is pain, but nothing good in life ever achieved without it!, the 69-year-old actor, affectionately called as Big B, tweeted.

In 1982, Bachchan was injured while shooting for the Hindi film Coolie directed by Manmohan Desai. He sustained a near-fatal intestinal injury which could have possibly led to the latest medical condition. At that time, the whole country prayed for his recovery and a couple of fans even committed suicide after learning about the actor's critical condition.

Bachchan has acted in around 180 films in a career spanning four decades in Bollywood.
