Viewers, voters and much of the internet cried along with Vice President Joe Biden Thursday as President Barack Obama surprised him with a tribute and medal of freedom to honor his tenure as second-in-command. Biden and Obama brought up their most memorable moments from the past eight years, showered each other with compliments and even referenced their "bromance" as their time in the White House drew to a close.

Biden and Obama, who were once at odds, have spent the past two terms as not only partners but also pals. Their relationship has been the subject of countless articles, memes and even a BuzzFeed video in which Obama made Biden a yarn friendship bracelet.

"We’ve never had that between a sitting president and a vice president in recent times, one where the friendship and familiarity factor was sky-high,” Douglas Brinkley, a Rice University professor and expert in history, told the Washington Post recently.

If you're already feeling nostalgic, read a few things the men have said about each other.

By Obama about Biden:

"To know Joe Biden is to know that love without pretense, service without self-regard, and to live life fully," Obama said. "As one of his long-time colleagues in the senate who happened to be a Republican once said, 'If you can't admire Joe Biden as a person, you have got a problem.' He is as good a man as god ever created."

"He’s not just a great vice president, he is a great friend. We’ve gotten so close that in some places in Indiana, they won’t serve us pizza anymore."

"To Joe and Jill: Just like everybody else here, Michelle and I thank God you are in our lives. Taking this ride with you is one of the great pleasures of our lives. Joe, you are my brother."

"I’m grateful every day that you’ve got such a big heart, and a big soul, and those broad shoulders. I couldn’t admire you more."

"You were the first choice I made as a nominee, and the best. Not just because you have been a great vice president, but because in the bargain, I gained a brother. We love you and Jill like family, and your friendship has been one of the great joys of our life."

"He has been a lion of American history. The best part is, he's nowhere close to finished."

By Biden about Obama:

"He has a great line when friends ask him, 'What’s it like with Joe?' He says, 'It’s like an older brother–younger brother. We make up for each other’s shortcomings.' Well, he makes up for a lot more of my shortcomings than I do his."

"Best decision of my political career was to join the president."

"My grandchildren and his children are each other's best friends now; they vacation together."

"Look, I spend between, depending on the season, four to seven hours a day every single day with the president. I attend every meeting the president has at his request — I did not ask to do that, but at his request."

"A brother to me, a best friend forever."

"One of two things I told the president was, I’m not wearing any funny hats and I’m not changing my brand."

"He got up and he said: 'Don’t sell that house. Promise me you won’t sell the house. I’ll give you the money. Whatever you need, I’ll give you the money.'"

"It's never useful in my view for a president and a vice-president to disagree, not just in public, even among closest advisers. He's got to know he can come to me and whatever he says to me, will stay with me forever."

"I'd do anything for him, and I think he would for me ... this is a family thing, we know each others' families really well, the way that he loved my son."
