A six-year-old girl in China, who was knocked unconscious while playing, was later beaten to death by her 12-year-old cousin, who was scared that the girl would tell his parents about what happened.

Police said Thursday that the unnamed girl was playing with her cousins Saturday when she became unconscious after falling from a climbing frame. Out of fear that the girl would get up and tell his parents about what happened, the boy, who was her regular playmate, began hitting her with a wooden plank until she died.

The girl’s parents filed a missing complaint after she did not return home. On Sunday, the body was found in a bag at an abandoned home owned by the accused’s family. The investigation concluded that the girl was killed by her cousin, however, the boy was not charged with the offense because of his age.

The victim’s grandmother said the girl had suffered “horrible injuries” to her neck and head.

“Police said she had been beaten but the weapon has not yet been found,” she said. Police confirmed no further action will be taken against the boy.

In a similar incident in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh earlier this month, a seven-year-old girl was killed by her 15-year-old cousin after she made fun of his nose. Police said the boy strangulated the girl to death at his home after she teased him. He then told his grandmother that “he punished the girl for bullying him.” His grandmother then asked him to flee. When the girl was nowhere to be found, her parents filed a missing complaint. Police raided the accused’s home and recovered the body after they noticed a foul smell. The boy, who had “no remorse or guilt” about what he had done, was taken into custody four days later.
