Did the Bangtan Boys just drop the first teaser for their upcoming comeback?

BTS, comprising of members Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Rap Monster, Jimin, V and Jungkook, released a new short film titled “Wings” via their agency BigHit Entertainment’s official YouTube channel on Monday, Sept. 5. The boy group also shared the video on Twitter.

The short film opens with BTS' leader Rap Monster reciting a line from Hermann Hesse' 1919 coming-of-age story “Demian: The Story Of Emil Sinclair's Youth,” saying, “The realms of day and night, two different worlds coming from two opposite poles mingled during this time.” The first scene shows BTS’ main vocalist Jungkook, who appears to be having a nightmare about a car crash and a burning piano. He startles awake and finds himself in a dark room alone. A line from BTS' song "Tomorrow" then flashes on the screen, which says, "Because the dawn right before the sun rises is the darkest."

Jungkook then gets up from the bed and picks up a photo lying on the floor, which turns out to be a drawing of a boy with blood on his face. When Jungkook looks up, he sees a painting of a boy on a canvas in front of him and he's now holding a brush in his hand, while rain falls in the background.

Jungkook is shocked when the painting suddenly bursts into flames, but his attention is drawn away by a flock of birds flying overhead. In the next second, the flames and the birds are suddenly gone, with the painting looking pristine again as if nothing had happened. Jungkook sees another picture on the floor, this time a drawing of a bird which he places inside an envelope. The final scene shows Jungkook standing in the middle of the dark room by himself, light illuminating his figure, but his shadow appears to have a large set of wings.

BigHit Entertainment did not release a statement clarifying whether the video is a comeback teaser or a separate project for BTS. However, some fans speculated that it could be a teaser for a new album, since Jungkook appeared to be singing a new song in the clip. In addition, “Wings” was directed by Choi Yong Seok of Lumpens, the same company who created the music videos for BTS’ “I Need U,” “Run” “Prologue” and “Fire” from their “The Most Beautiful Moment In Life” series, according to BigHit.

But whether or not “Wings” is BTS’ comeback teaser, the short film appears to be the first of a series of videos since it's entitled “#1 Begin,” signifying that there’s more to come. Perhaps each BTS member will star in a short film of his own or they will join Jungkook one by one as the story progresses.

Meanwhile, BTS' "Wings" began trending worldwide shortly after the video was released, with fans taking to Twitter to share their theories about the meaning of the video and how it could be related to the “Most Beautiful Moment In Life” series. Some fans speculated that the car crash Jungkook was dreaming about in the beginning of the clip could be the same one that was hinted on in “I Need U,” and that he might be in the afterlife in "Wings." Another fan theory suggested that the boy in the painting might be Suga and that the flames could be reminiscent of the rapper burning the room he was staying at in “I Need U."
