Music icon Cher may be known around the world for her hit songs, but on Saturday, she became a trending topic on Twitter after sharing a tweet about George Floyd’s death.

On Friday, Cher shared a tweet detailing a conversation she had with her mother, Georgia Holt, about the Derek Chauvin trial. The Minneapolis police officer faces charges of third-degree murder, second-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter after kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, CNN reports.

Cher’s tweet revealed the singer felt she could have helped Floyd, an unarmed Black man, at the time of his arrest.

“Was talking With Mom & She Said ‘I Watched Trial Of Policeman Who Killed George Floyd,& Cried.’ I Said ‘Mom, I Know This Is Gonna Sound CRAZY, But.. I Kept Thinking .....Maybe If I’d Been There,...I Could’ve Helped,’” the singer wrote.

However, the folks on Twitter weren’t fans of Cher’s comments and began dragging the singer and those who attempted to justify her post.

“For all of you defending Cher’s comments, Think about what you’re saying—— Black people need the intervention of white celebrities to keep white cops from murdering them. That’s a sad indictment on America,” one person wrote.

Meanwhile, one person attempted to explain Cher’s reasoning for sharing the tweet.

“I think she felt like any human being would have felt-- and maybe b/c she is CHER they would have listened to her voice. I think she feels has helpless as the rest of us would in that situation, and she also said she knew it sounded crazy,” the individual wrote.

Cops were called on Floyd on May 25, 2020, after he gave a counterfeit $20 bill to a cashier at Cup Foods grocery store. However, after officers placed him in handcuffs, he was placed on his stomach, and Chauvin kneeled on his neck.

Chavin’s trial is expected to last at least four weeks. The former Minneapolis police officer has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
