It may have ultimately counted for little, but Christian Benteke registered an early contender for goal of the season with a sensational overhead kick for Liverpool against Manchester United. In the match between England’s two greatest rivals and two must successful teams in history, Liverpool were trailing 2-0 when Benteke awakened Liverpool’s challenge with six minutes remaining.

Jordan Ibe’s cross from the right was headed out by Daley Blind, but only as far as Benteke, who adjusted his position and leapt acrobatically off the ground before rocketing the ball over his shoulder and past David de Gea in the Manchester United net. The goal was Benteke’s second in a Liverpool shirt since a £ 32.5 million transfer from Aston Villa in the summer. But, unlike his first against Bournemouth last month, this one would not bring points to his new side.

Manchester United had gone in front in the second half through a fine Blind strike and an Ander Herrera penalty. And, just two minutes after Benteke’s wonder strike, Anthony Martial stole the headlines with a superb individual goal of his own on what was his Manchester United debut. The result leaves Liverpool on seven points after five matches of the Premier League season.
