  • NBCUniversal to make its latest movies available on-demand
  • Most of the theaters are closed in various parts of the U.S. and studios are bearing massive losses
  • Movies like "The Invisible Man," "The Hunt" and more will be available on-demand

The threat of the coronavirus pandemic is getting bigger with each passing day. The pandemic has forced the cinema halls to shut their doors for the moviegoers to prevent the spread of the disease. As a result, many big production companies have decided to postpone the release of their upcoming movies. But NBCUniversal has taken a different step to ensure that the movies it produced could still reach the viewers, even if they are staying inside their homes.

In a press release obtained by the Hollywood Reporter, NBCUniversal has decided to make its latest movies available on-demand at the same time when they get released in a handful of theaters that are still open despite the pandemic. Movies like “The Invisible Man,” “The Hunt,” “Trolls World Tour” and “Emma” will be available on-demand starting Friday.

Elizabeth Moss’s “The Invisible Man” was perhaps the last big movie to release before the theaters started to close down because of the deadly disease. The movie proved to be a success at the box office and received universal acclaim.

The statement further said that this was the right time for them to make this feature available for the viewers. People have been wanting to see their favorite movies in theaters but due to “unprecedented” changes that have taken place in recent times, they have not been able to catch up with the movies that they were willing to watch.

“NBCUniversal will continue to evaluate the environment as conditions evolve and will determine the best distribution strategy in each market when the current situation changes,” the statement read.

As of late, only four movies will be available on-demand. No decision has been taken on future projects.

Massive upcoming projects like “Mulan,” “The New Mutants,” and “Antlers” have been pushed back due to the rising death toll worldwide. Meanwhile, the makers of “A Quiet Place: Part II” and “F9” have also decided to postpone the release of their respective movies.

Recently, networks like NBC, CBS, and HBO announced that all their talk shows will be taped live without an audience in the wake of the deadly pandemic. NBC confirmed that Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers will be hosting their shows without any audience. HBO and Comedy Central followed the pattern and said that the shooting of their respective talk shows will also take place without an audience.

According to a report, more than 182,603 people have now been infected with the virus. The worldwide death toll has also reached 7,171.
