A 34-year-old father has found himself behind bars for allegedly trying out an ancient, bizarre and sick punishment method on his seven-year-old son who was accused of theft.

The man from Cairo, Egypt, allegedly smeared honey on the boy and tied him to a stake. He then left the terrified child on the roof of their house to the mercy of mosquitoes, flies and other insects, reported Arab News.

The incident, that happened on May 25, came to light after the child's distressed mother called the police, pleading with them to help the boy.

The mother also clicked photos of the child lying helpless on the floor, bound and in pain. The images have since gone viral, said the report quoting local Arab media.

The incident has triggered an outrage, prompting the prosecution office in the Delta city of Shebin al-Qanater to launch a detailed investigation into alleged child abuse. The Public Prosecution has also ordered the confiscation of the mother’s phone containing the pictures.

According to local reports, the man, who works as a driver in Cairo, resorted to this ancient Persian torture method, know as Scaphism, to discipline the boy.

"One of the family’s neighbors claimed the victim had stolen something from them, prompting the father to torture his kid brutally," the mother was quoted by Gulf News.

The horrified mother has also approached a child welfare body in Cairo and filed a complaint in this regard. She also alleged her husband brutally assaulted her and their children.

The man is now in custody undergoing investigation while the authorities have referred the child to a hospital, to document the injuries he suffered.

Another case of brutal child abuse was reported in the Arab country of Lebanon two days ago. A video that was released by social media activist Abdul Kader Al-Bay showed a boy chained to the house by his mother for over three days. According to Al-Bay, the boy, hailing from the southern Lebanese village of Jouaiyya, was rescued by policemen who broke into the house and arrested his mother. The video clearly shows the child in a distraught state as security forces attempt to unchain him.
