It’s no easy feat staying married and in love even when you’re not an international star, but David Beckham and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham managed to do so for 18 years.

While Americans celebrated their independence on the 4th of July, the two celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary. Fans have no clue what special date they enjoyed or what gifts they gave each other to mark the occasion, but they were treated to some beautiful throwback pictures on their social media accounts.

Even their son, Cruz, thought his parents’ wedding anniversary was such a big deal that he thanked them on Instagram for being fantastic role models.

It might seem like their marriage has always been smooth-sailing for the Beckhams, but the two earlier said that it takes a lot of hard work to stay committed to their family. “We're a strong family unit. We've got strong parents. We were brought up with the right values,” David said in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. “Of course you make mistakes over the years, and we all know marriage is difficult at times. It’s about working through it.”

People have often suspected that they stayed together for publicity, but Beckham would beg to differ. “We know each other better than anybody. People have talked about, ‘Do we stay together because it's a brand?’ Of course not. We stay together because we love each other, because we have four amazing children,” he explained. “Do you go through tough times? Of course. That’s part of relationships. It’s part of marriages. It’s part of having children. It’s part of having responsibilities.”

Meanwhile, Victoria earlier wrote a letter to her younger self in Vogue and revealed that she instantly fell in love with David when she saw him. “Yes, love at first sight does exist. It will happen to you in the Manchester United players’ lounge - although you will get a little drunk, so exact details are hazy,” she told her younger self. “While the other football players stand at the bar drinking with their mates, you will see David standing aside with his family. (He’s not even in the first team at this stage - you are the famous one.) And he has such a cute smile. You, too, are close to your family, and you will think how similar he feels to you.”
