A Brazilian doctor was bitten by a deadly snake after it fell on her head from a waterfall while she was standing beneath it.

The incident took place last Sunday at the Serra Azul Waterfall in the State of São Paolo.

The horrific incident was caught on camera by another swimmer who was bathing at the popular tourist destination. The video shows Dieynne Saugo standing under a waterfall when she was bitten. She can be heard screaming in pain and swimming away from the waterfall.

According to local reports, the snake was dragged by the current from the river above and landed on her, biting her twice on the arm. The snake was identified as the highly venomous Bothrops jararaca.

The woman reportedly received an antidote for snake poison before being transferred to a private hospital where she was in the Intensive Care Unit.

"People who are concerned about my sister’s situation, she is in the ICU, but she is in a stable state, thank God !!" the woman's family wrote on social media, as reported by local media G1. "She has two bites, it is swollen where it bit, which is normal in the situation that happened, but it has already disinfected a lot."

"Thank you for the messages and support, I just ask for prayers to get through this soon, and I know that everything will be okay, because whoever is in charge, is bigger than everything," the family added.

According to Animal Diversity, the Bothrops jararaca snake poses a risk to humans and the toxins present "cause swelling at the envenomation site, necrosis, blistering, hemorrhagic blebs, systemic bleeding into the skin, gums, and nose, and subconjunctival hemorrhage."

"Collectively, these effects can lead to death due to shock, renal failure, and intracranial hemorrhage, compounded by severe hypotension."
