Two years after her overdose, Demi Lovato is thriving. She's got a new love, new music, and new management with Scooter Braun but as it turns out, the latter almost didn't happen.

In an interview with Bustle released on Tuesday, both Demi and Scooter opened up about their working relationship began starting with what the 27-year-old songstress was looking for in a manager.

"In the past, I projected my own abandonment issues onto other people, especially male figures that I looked up to as father figures," the "Sorry Not Sorry" star shared. "I had to reflect on, 'What do I want my relationship with my manager to look like without enmeshing my own father issues onto him?'"

Based on that Demi had come to the conclusion that she wanted Braun, who also manages Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, to do the same for her, adding, "I wanted him to manage me so bad, and I was terrified of rejection." However, rejection is exactly what the longtime entrepreneur and manager was planning to dish out--until they actually met.

"What I saw is that she needed someone who didn't need her. And about halfway through the meeting, [my partner Allison Kaye and I] both looked at each other and instinctually kind of laughed. And then Allison texted me and goes, 'You're thinking the same thing I am.' I knew I could help her. I knew Allison could help her," the 39-year-old explained, making reference to his past experience of handling with clients who have struggled with issues like substance abuse and mental health.

"I've been through that with Justin...I've been through that with Ariana, you know?" he said. "I felt like, because I've been through that a couple of times with people who started off very young. I can understand [Demi’s] struggles a little bit."

This exchange happened in 2019, one year after her overdose. Now, one year since forging their relationship, Demi had planned to put her foot on the gas and have the comeback of a lifetime. Although some of her plans had to be postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak (i.e. touring), she's still having quite the comeback year starting with her Grammy performance of "Anyone," her singing of the national anthem at the Super Bowl, a role in the Netflix film "Eurovision," her upcoming YouTube documentary, and more.
