Yellowstone National Park officials announced on Thursday that a foot detached from a human body but still inside of a shoe was found by an employee in one of the parks' hot springs.

The foot was found on Tuesday at the Abyss Pool near the West Thumb Geyser Basin, which is 53 feet deep and stays around 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Officials at the park are now investigating the incident.

Jen Mignard, a resident of Shepherd, Montana, who was at the Abyss Pool the day the foot was found, told Cowboy State Daily that it felt like something was wrong and that there was a heavy police presence at the time. "We knew something bad had happened," she said.

Police were blocking off the entrance to the hot spring and not allowing anyone from the public into the area or the parking lot. Mignard also explained that she spotted a helicopter flying to the scene and that "helicopters don't fly here."

"It was such an abnormal sight to see in the park. There was a lot of fear and apprehension that something was seriously wrong. It was a dark feeling," she added.

Although, it is somewhat common for people to become burned or "scalded" to death and eventually "dissolve" from the hot water. It is unclear if this is what happened to who the foot belongs to.
