Selena Gomez is content in her relationship with The Weeknd but that doesn’t mean she needs a man to complete her. In a new interview, the “Fetish” singer revealed that her latest romance would be nothing without friendship.

While speaking to InStyle for the September issue, Gomez explained that she doesn’t expect her boyfriend to be the sole reason behind her happiness. “I’m lucky because he’s more of a best friend than anything else,” she told the magazine.

“I don’t depend on one area of my life to make me happy. It’s really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family and to make sure that I never get influenced by a guy,” the “13 Reasons Why” producer said.

Gomez revealed that it took her some time but she finally figured out a way to stand on her own. “I’ve wanted to be in a strong head space for years, and I really wasn’t. Before, I was so young and easily influenced, and I’d feel insecure. You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you, if that makes sense,” the “Bad Liar” singer revealed.

The former Disney star, who has been dating the Canadian artist since late last year, was initially quiet about the romance but has become more open about addressing their relationship in the past few months.

In June, Gomez revealed that she was done hiding her personal life. “I think for me I have experienced so many different phases in my life because I’ve been doing this for so long I don’t think there is anything that I want to, not necessarily hide but I’m genuinely myself,” she said during her “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” interview.

The singer explained that she was more focused on being happy. “Hiding things...it’s too much pressure. I’m so happy with my music, my health is most important, my family is most important, but at the same time, I just want to be happy. So if that’s me just being myself, then I don’t really care,” she told the host.

In the present day, Gomez revealed that she is happy with how far she has come. Last year, the singer canceled her Revival World Tour to focus on her health which included dealing with her lupus diagnosis and its side effects, which consist of anxiety and panic attacks.

“It’s so weird, how one year can change everything. Last year I canceled my tour and went away for 90 days, and it was the best thing that I ever could’ve done. I had no phone, nothing, and I was scared. But it was amazing, and I learned a lot,” she told InStyle.

“Everything I cared about, I stopped caring about. I came out, and it felt like, ‘OK, I can only go forward.’ And there are still days. I go to therapy. I believe in that and talking about where you are. But I'm in a really, really healthy place,” the star added.

Gomez celebrated her 25th birthday on July 22 and from the looks of her Instagram page, it seems like she is determined to make it a year of happiness.
