After months of anticipation, AMC Theatres, the world's largest movie theater chain, has added meme tokens Dogecoin and Shiba Inu to its list of accepted cryptocurrencies.

The dog-themed coins could be accepted on the theater chain's website as early as next week, said CEO Adam Aron, who hinted in November that the company might issue its own cryptocurrency.

"AMC IT says that BitPay will be live for AMC online payments on our website by March 19, and live on our mobile apps by April 16. Possibly a few days earlier. BitPay, and therefore soon AMC, accepts Doge Coin and Shiba Inu," the CEO announced.

"Your replies just might break the internet, given your clear enthusiasm and interest in cryptocurrency. As promised, the http://amctheatres.com website now accepts Dogecoin and Shiba Inu for online payments! A special shout out to @BitPay for helping us to make this happen," Aron said in a separate tweet.

AMC Theatres started accepting Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash for payments in November last year.

It then ran Twitter polls to find out if it should move forward with the integration of Shiba Inu and Dogecoin. AMC initially introduced digital AMC gift cards but eventually, Aron said the theater chain will adopt more versatility measures to both dog-themed tokens.

The CEO later revealed that his company has begun working on allowing payments through DOGE and SHIB.

In November, the CEO floated the idea that AMC might issue its own cryptocurrency, but he has not yet provided any update on the said idea. The movie theater chain had also tested the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) space. In January 2021, it gave away over half a million NFTs to its shareholders.

Shiba Inu was trading down 1.70% at $0.00002244 with a 24-hour volume of $714,961,653 as of 4:49 a.m. ET on March 11. Dogecoin was trading up 0.64% at $0.1168 with a 24-hour volume of $427,373,011, data from CoinMarketCap showed.
