President Donald Trump’s campaign, along with the Republican National Committee, brought in $210 million in the month of August, but this fundraising haul fell short of his Democratic challenger during the same period. Democratic nominee Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee raised $365 million in August, the same month Biden announced California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate.

“The Trump campaign will have all the resources we need to spread the message of President Trump’s incredible record of achievement, on the ground and on the air, and define Joe Biden as a tool of the radical left,” Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said about the fundraising.

The Trump campaign faces financial difficulties, with the president willing to use up to $100 million of his own money for his reelection bid. A New York Times investigation published on Monday revealed that the Trump campaign spent $800 million of its $1.1 billion war chest between the beginning of the year and July.

"My Campaign spent a lot of money up front in order to compensate for the false reporting and Fake News concerning our handling of the China Virus," Trump tweeted on Tuesday. "Now they see the GREAT job we have done, and we have 3 times more than we had 4 years ago - & are up in polls. Lots of $'s & ENERGY!"

Trump has targeted social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube for digital advertisements, with his campaign also reserving commercials on Fox News, in order to cater to his conservative base. The Biden campaign has reserved $280 million in digital and tv ads for the fall, targeting 15 battleground states.

Recent polls show Biden with the lead in the general election. A recent Economist/YouGov survey shows Biden leading by 9 points nationwide over Trump, 52% to 43%.
