Donald Trump was recently accused of trying to poach German scientists that have been working on an experimental coronavirus vaccine.

According to the German publication Die Welt, the POTUS is looking at having an extensive license rolled out in the United States. A source close to the German government claimed that under the president’s plans, a vaccine would only be made available in the country.

“The German government is very interested in having the development of vaccines and active substances against the novel coronavirus undertaken in Germany and Europe,” a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Health said.

On March 2, then CEO of CureVac Daniel Menichella visited the White House to meet with the POTUS and Vice President Mike Pence. Representatives of pharmaceutical companies were also there.

“We are very confident that we will be able to develop a potent vaccine candidate within a few months,” Menichella said but shortly after, he was replaced as CEO by founder Ingmar Hoerr.

According to the publication, Trump offered large sums of money to get exclusive access to CureVac, which also has sites in Frankfurt and Boston. The news angered German politicians who demanded that Berlin do everything necessary to prevent the United States from controlling access to a possible coronavirus vaccine.

“The American regime has committed an extremely unfriendly act. Capitalism has limits,” Social Democrat MP Karl Lauterbach said.

In the past, the POTUS has been very skeptical when it comes to vaccines. But by the looks of it, his perspective on it changed amid the coronavirus outbreak. In April, Melania Trump’s husband also encouraged Americans to get vaccinated amid a measles outbreak.

“They have to get the shots. The vaccinations are so important. This is really going around now. They have to get their shots,” he said.

Years earlier, Trump was convinced that there was a link between vaccinations during early infancy and the development of autism.
