  • Dua Lipa said that the meme also inspired her to work harder
  • It made her want to prove to her critics her "staying power"
  • The singer is set to go on tour this September

Dua Lipa has revealed that the 2018 viral meme “Give Us Nothing” knocked her confidence but pushed her to do better in her career.

The meme in question came out after her performance at the Brit Awards, during which she sang her hit “New Rules.” The video of her performance drew mixed reactions, but the one that stood out said: “I love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!” The comment, which was later deleted, turned into a meme and instantly spread like wildfire across the web.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the 25-year-old pop star did not deny that the meme deeply affected her, but she said it also inspired her to work harder. “It’s one thing when people are mean about you, but you know that you did your best,” she told the outlet.

“But it’s another thing when people are mean about you and you know that you actually haven’t had the opportunity to be the best because you’ve spread yourself so thinly in trying to do everything at once,” she added.

Since the meme made the rounds online, Dua Lipa has become "more motivated" to prove to her critics that she’s got staying power. It has also made her want to make sure that all her performances are amazing. “I’m going to prove to people that I can do this and that I’m here to stay,” she said.

Today, Dua Lipa is one of the most bankable artists of her generation. In the last couple of years, she has earned wide recognition for her performances at the Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, and the MTV EMAs. She also received praises for her recent performance at the 2021 Brit Awards.

The singer also revealed during her recent guesting at ''Radio DeeJay Summer Camp'' that she is set to go on tour in September after facing delays due to the pandemic. “The year delay to my tour makes it even more exciting,” she said, adding: “I’m really looking forward to performing live with a live audience.”
