KEY POINTS

  • Emily VanCamp is exiting Fox’s medical drama "The Resident" after four seasons, reports say
  • The announcement came just days after she revealed she and her husband welcomed a baby girl
  • Shaunette Renée Wilson also departed "The Resident" earlier this year

Emily VanCamp is leaving "The Resident" after four seasons.

VanCamp, 36, has played nurse Nicolette "Nic" Nevin on Fox's medical drama since the series debuted in 2018. However, she asked to be released from the show as "The Resident" wrapped up its fourth season, Deadline reported.

The "Revenge" alum could potentially return in some fashion in a future installment, unnamed sources told Variety, but her character's storyline is expected to wrap up early in Season 5.

It's unclear why VanCamp is departing "The Resident," but Entertainment Weekly noted that she and her husband, actor Josh Bowman, just welcomed a baby girl. "Welcome to the world our sweet little Iris. Our hearts are full," she wrote on Instagram last week.

A Fox spokesperson declined to comment when asked by EW about her exit.

VanCamp's real-life pregnancy was incorporated into her Season 4 storyline, with her character Nic giving birth to a daughter in the finale, Variety noted. However, the newly released "Resident" Season 5 promo included a scene where two police officers deliver what seems to be bad news to Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), Nic's husband.

"If you thought last season changed everything, just wait," the teaser foreshadowed.

Fans took to Twitter to express disappointment over the news of her departure. Some speculated that she may be taking a break to focus on her family, while others suggested she could be busy with another project.

"Well she just had a baby so that's probably why. She wants to focus on motherhood," one commented.

"I wonder if it's because she's going to be too busy with Marvel?" another asked.

Aside from VanCamp, Morris Chestnut, who plays neurosurgeon Barrett Cain, will not return as a series regular, though he is expected to recur. Shaunette Renée Wilson, who plays Mina Okafor, also left "The Resident" earlier this year.

Considering the exit announcements coming from the show these past months, one fan speculated, "There’s something going on with that show. Maybe some behind-the-scenes drama."

But another commented, "She just had a daughter obviously she'll take a break. Not everything is about toxic workplaces."

VanCamp filmed "The Resident" and Disney+'s "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" simultaneously. She made her debut as Agent Sharon Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she appeared in 2013's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

She told The Hollywood Reporter in April that while it had been very challenging to do both projects at the same time, "The Resident" was "extremely accommodating."

"They had to hide tons of bruises, and I had bloody hands many, many days after my fight training," VanCamp told THR. "So they did a lot in hiding those things, and they were cheering me on as well. So I was lucky that I was able to tackle both at the same time."

"The Resident" Season 5 premieres on Sept. 21 on Fox.
