Over 1,000 buildings were destroyed by a massive EF-3 tornado that hit south-central Kansas.

On Friday, the tornado hit the Wichita suburb of Andover with over 165 mph winds and stretched nearly 13 miles. The National Weather Service officially rated the tornado Saturday after gathering data.

“The city of Andover will be affected by this for years,” Andover Fire Chief Chad Russell said.

As many as 400 buildings were completely destroyed by the tornado and a total of 1,074 buildings suffered damaged in the 15,000-person suburb.

The tornado struck on about the 30th anniversary of a 1991 tornado, which had estimated winds around 260 mph and killed 17 people. The 1991 tornado lasted on the ground for 69 miles and was a third of a mile wide, the Topeka Capitol-Journal reported.

“We still have scars from 1991 (EF-5 tornado). I’m so thankful this tornado was not as bad as that, but we will literally be doing this for years," Russell said.

A resident of Andover, Alaina Adkins, 26, told CNN news that she went to her neighbor’s basement to take shelter because she lives in an apartment, and it was coming straight for her building. The tornado ended up missing her building only by a block.

"I just couldn't believe. It just didn't look real," Adkins said.

"We stepped out of our front door, and it was coming straight to our place," she said.
