Fear the Walking Dead
"Fear the Walking Dead" will introduce a new character for Season 2 during a half hour special set on an airplane. AMC

If you’ve ever had the thought: “I’m not afraid of zombies, they can barely move,” then there’s some bad news - now they can fly. Or at least they will in a new “Fear the Walking Dead” half hour special coming to AMC.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network will produce a half-hour standalone story set on a passenger airplane just as a zombie outbreak ignites on board. The story will be set in the “Fear the Walking Dead” timeline (just before episode one of its companion series “The Walking Dead”) and will act as an introduction to a new Season 2 character. That’s right, someone on the plane will survive and that character will then join the cast of the already announced 15-episode second season of “Fear the Walking Dead,” scheduled to premiere in 2016.

Now, here’s where things get complicated. The half hour special will debut online, similar to the many web shorts that “The Walking Dead” has put out as web exclusives over the years. However, unlike the previous shorts, not only will this one directly tie into the TV show’s canon, it will air on TV during Season 6 of “The Walking Dead” when it returns this October. As Entertainment Weekly reports, viewers will watch the show like normal, but during the commercial breaks, will be treated to chapters of the ultimately half-hour-long plane story.

Precious little is known about the plot of this half hour special other than that it takes place on an airplane and that at least one person will survive to go on to Season 2 of “Fear the Walking Dead.” Details about who that character is, what the short will be called and whether or not it will have a large impact on the events in “Fear the Walking Dead” after the show wraps up its first season - all remains to be seen.
