Conservative finance guru Dave Ramsey sparked criticism Thursday for attacking those who need stimulus checks as having "a mental health problem." Ramsey's bootstrapping language on Fox News’ "America’s Newsroom" sent him to the top of Twitter’s trending list as commentators berated him for ignoring structural and circumstantial issues.

“If $600 or $1,400 changes your life, you were pretty much screwed already,” Ramsey said. “You've got other issues going on. You have a career problem, you have a debt problem, you have a relationship problem, you have a mental health problem, something else is going on if $600 changes your life."

Ramsey did try to tempter his words a bit, saying that he wasn’t trying to speak down to the people he had assailed seconds earlier.

“I've been bankrupt, I've been broke and I work with people every day who are hurting. I love people. I want people to be lifted up."

Ramsey talked about student loan debt forgiveness for most of the runtime.

Ramsey, a former Fox Business Network host, does have an incentive to make people believe that the true solution to their financial woes lies outside politics -- he manages an extensive brand of websites, books and radio shows all dedicated to financial advice.

Users on Twitter were quick to turn on him, branding his comments as tone deaf.
